POETRY: "Envying Childhood" By Christina Taragjini

“Envying Childhood”
By Christina Taragjini

The naivety of children is yearned for by adults.

The sense of adventure and creativity expresses itself
and makes going to the grocery store

seem like an adventure through the jungle.

The hateful feelings toward time
are not formed because of the realization that life is passing
rather time makes games and parties come to an end.

The stress of creating balance
applies only in the sense that a child has to balance
its building blocks of the Lego tower.

The ability to love only matters
when deciding which toy to choose
for its allotted 5-minute play time.

Yet years slip away from us like grains of sand.
Birthdays don’t bring joy, but loneliness.

And those little children that we envy,
that we are jealous of,
that we feel superior to,

actually surpass us.

Because though they may get older in age,
the child still lives on inside
and creates a better adult

than anyone of us could ever be.
