POETRY: "It's Your Birthday (Bet You Didn't Know)" By Ynden Lizardo

"It's Your Birthday (Bet You Didn't Know)"
By Ynden Lizardo

You’re made of stardust.
Not the kind pixies throw around
to make you feel all giddy and good inside,
but the literal clusters of atoms made
within gases of burning light,
fused with other evanescent elements,
trillions of years ago.
The atoms that make you up
are as old as those that make up your grandfather,
and the stars embedded in the night sky.
Happy birthday.
You existed before the day you were born,
before you were even conceived.
Celebrate the fact that for trillions of years
the universe,
fate,
destiny,
God,
everything that factors into chance,
made you who you are today:
a carefully constructed individual,
or a mistake
generated by random occurrences,
paired this chromosome with that,
or that gave you this gene instead of that one.
The circle of life is eternal.
Molecules,
created when time itself was only beginning,
found their way into a pool of life
filled with basic prokaryotic cells,
fit enough to survive through every stage of evolution
until they would be made into a temporary human body,
before it would inevitably return to the ground
back into the environment,
into the atmosphere,
and eventually back among the stars in the heavens.
