"In Address to the Unseen"
By Ashley Barron
Other half of my self,
Spirit that is not mine,
but that belongs to me all the same.
Presence that I feel
when I am alone in the dark,
lost, afraid,
in need of comfort.
I see you not,
and yet I know you are there.
Through every trial and tribulation,
every doubt and hardship
your voice has led me,
your hand guided me.
You have been at my back
and pushing me forward
even when I thought I had not the strength
to move again.
When I have doubted myself,
you have picked me up.
When I have turned my face in shame,
you have lifted it to the sky in pride.
You have taught me
to see the world in a different light;
to see even myself
in a different light.
And I am thankful--
always--
for the steadiness of your assurance.
Ours is a bond
extending far beyond the limitations of time,
space,
matter;
even reality has no hold
no sway over our connection,
for ours is a bond, not of hands,
but of souls;
the very essence of life
intertwined and interwoven
into indeterminate infinity.
I am you--yours;
you are me--mine.
Until the universe takes its last breath
and settles finally into groaning oblivion,
so shall we be.
