POETRY: "The School Cycle" By Emily Waters

“School Cycle”
By Emily Waters

At the end of summer,
I want to go to school
like a small child who sees something
on the airplane of a spoon zipping towards him.
Then, the middle of the year hits,
I now long for winter break
and to have my weekends free again,
the spoon has not reached the child’s mouth yet,
but his mom is taunting him with it.

It’s the third quarter now,
and the spoon has been shoved
into the child’s mouth,
he now realizes that it’s green beans,

and he hates green beans.

By the last few weeks of the year,
when there are so many tests, I’m sure
you could lay out each individual piece of paper
one after the other
and circle the globe ten thousand times.
The child spits out the food in loathing
and wonders
why would she feed me those awful green beans?

Summer comes again, and time fades
just like the taste of the green beans,
and the airplane of a spoon zips towards him again,
and he opens wide.
