POETRY: "Over and Over and Over" by Glacys Agustin

"Over and Over and Over"
By Glacys Agustin

"I promise. I really mean it this time."
You might as well be brandishing a knife,
telling me you're not dangerous.
Don't you think I know by now?

What are you?
A broken record?
A residual haunting?

No.

More like a serial murderer.

This scene has been on replay for way too long.
Just turn off the friggin' television.
"I'll catch you," you say,
then you step aside as I fall backwards,
apologizing
telling me it won't happen again;

well, screw that.
After about, I don't know,
maybe a hundred times?
I don't think that little trick is going to work.

Let me be blunt.

I think you're stupid.

Honestly.
Why do you not see
when a person legitimately cares?
Why do you take advantage
of the unfortunate girls who fall for you?
Why do you think
that someone will be fooled by your act
over and over and over...?
Why
in the world
do you make the same mistakes
and not
friggin'
learn
from
them?

Or maybe everyone else is at fault.
You did warn them, didn't you?
They all made the wrong choice
because you told them
that you cheat
and you lie
and you stomp on people's hearts
and stab them in the back.
They're supposed to keep all this in mind
while you stare at them with puppy dog eyes
and beg them not to leave you?

Just to give you an answer
because you always ask,
"Why doesn't anything go right for me?"
I'll tell you this-
It's your own fault.
Fix yourself, for goodness' sake.
Aren't you tired of it?
'Cause I sure as hell am.
